Bring Your Own Off Road Vehicle.

Planning on bringing your own ATV? Be certain to check with the State rules and regulations. In many instances, an ATV or snow mobile permit is required. A permit is required if operating an ATV on public lands (ATV use must be permitted on that land). Out of state permits are accepted if the state accepts Oregon ATV permits. When planning on what and where to ride, be familiar with the categories of off-road vehicles. There are three categories, Class I, II and III.

Class I is the typical 4 wheeler ATV. They must be 50" wide or less, and a dry weight of 800 pounds or less, have saddle or seat and travel on three or four tires. These are commonly used in the dune areas north of Coos Bay and around Reedsport - Winchester Bay.

Class II weighs more than a Class I all-terrain vehicle, and is actually being driven off-road. Examples include Jeeps and other 4-wheel drive vehicles especially designed for off-road use. Operator requirements include a valid drivers license. Youth under 18 must wear a DOT approved helmet with the chin strap fastened (unless vehicle is registered and has a roof or roll bar). Liability insurance is required by law for all Class II vehicles.

Class III are defined as vehicles riding on two tires with a dry weight of less than 600 pounds. These are typically referred to as off-road motorcycles. Class III are frequently used on dirt trails or gravel roads in the national forests.
